Titan Radio

Titan Radio is Cal State Fullerton's student-run radio station. As a web development intern, I worked on redesigning several website pages and improve SEO visibility to help the station connect with its audience.

Problem Statement

Titan Radio's website was outdated, hard to navigate, and under-optimized for search engines. This limited discoverability, hurt listener engagement, and made it difficult for students to explore shows, events, and staff content.

Key Issues:

  • Poor mobile responsiveness
  • Outdated design and navigation
  • Little to no SEO indexing or search traffic

These issues made it difficult for students to discover the station, access content, or learn about how to get involved.

Goals

To improve the visibility, performance, and usability of the Titan Radio website. We wanted to update the website with current information while ensuring that it reflects the station's fun and creative identity while making it easier for students to engage and participate.

Research & Audit Process

I began my internship by updating surface-level content like the Meet the DJs, blog posts, and staff pages for Spring 2025. As I worked, I noticed deeper issues, like broken layouts, poor search visibility, and inconsistent design patterns.

This realization prompted me to take a step back and conduct a more intentional site audit of the structure, performance, and accessibility. I conducted a manuel accessibility check and reviewed SEO using tools like RankMath. I also ran PageSpeed Insights tests to benchmark performance.

Site Observations:

  • Initial updates revealed missing metadata, messy heading structures
  • Poor mobile formating
  • Little to no SEO indexing or search traffic

These insights helped shape my priorities and set a roadmap for deeper improvements across design, accessibility, and discoverability.

My Role

As a web development intern under Titan Radio's webmaster, I focused on improving key parts of the website's structure, design, and visability. While I wasn't the sole developer, I took initiative in proposing changes, leading specific page redesigns, and identifying areas where performance and accessibility could be improved.

Web Content & Structure

  • Update Meet the DJs, Meet the Staff, and blog pages for Spring 2025
  • Proposed and created a new Get Involved page to streamline student engagement
  • Contributed to redesigns of the About Us, Work with Us, Mobile Apps, and Contact Us pages

SEO & Accessibility

  • Flagged and resolved heading structure issues and missing alt text
  • Used Rank Math SEO to implement meta titles and descriptions as well as improve searchability
  • Suggested and implemented fixes for broken footer links and poor mobile responsiveness

Collaboration

  • Reported performance issues and audit findings to the webmaster
  • Worked collaboratively to troubleshoot design inconsistencies and implement front-end fixes using WordPress and WPBakery

Community Involvement

  • Contributed to writing the Spring 2025 Titan Radio Zine and hosted a Zine Launch Party
  • Recorded and hosted segments for The Feed, the Titan Rradio Staff Show
  • Hosted music events and helped table at campus events like Titanathon and the Arboretum Flea Market

Challenges Faced

Low Starting Visibility

Only 3 pages were indexed, and none ranked for "Titan Radio Website". I built SEO foundations from scratch by adding metadata, structured headings, and keyword alignment.

WordPress Limitations

WPBakery restricted flexibility and performance. I optimized within these constraints by compressing images and removing unnecessary plugins.

Lack of Clear Direction

My early tasks were surface-level updates. By auditing the site and keeping a weekly log, I was able to identify areas for improvement and prioritize tasks.

Improved Performance and Usability

After auditing and optimizing the site, PageSpeed Insights scores improved, and mobile responsiveness became much smoother. Students could now easily browse pages, navigate menus, and interact with content across devices.

Redesigned Pages

Led redesigns of the Get Involved, About Us, Contact Us, and Work With Us pages, each with clearer layouts, accessible formatting, and consistent branding. These updates made the site feel modern, approachable, and aligned with Titan Radio’s student-run identity.

New Content Creation

Proposed and built a new Get Involved page, making opportunities to join the station more visible and streamlined. Also updated DJ, Staff, and Blog pages to keep content fresh and relevant for Spring 2025.

Community Impact

Beyond technical improvements, the updated site helped Titan Radio connect with students more effectively. This is making it easier to discover shows, events, and opportunities to participate.

Reflection

At Titan Radio, I learned the importance of starting early with clear direction and building on a strong foundation of accessibility and SEO. I saw how design and development go hand in hand, and how performance, usability, and visual polish must be addressed together to make a lasting impact. Regular audits, thorough checks, and weekly reflections helped me grow, stay organized, and set clear goals for each step of the project.
